Benzodiazepines

This article will provide an overview of how we treat benzodiazepine detoxification at Tranquility Woods.

Benzodiazepine Detoxification

Benzodiazapine detoxification is the first step in our addiction treatment process.  Upon arrival, our clients meet with our medical staff for a medical assessment, history, and physical.

What are Benzodiazapines?

Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs commonly prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and other conditions affecting the central nervous system. They work by enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor, leading to sedative, hypnotic (sleep-inducing), anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.

The Common Types of Benzodiazepines

Brand Commonly Prescribed For
Halcion, Serax, Versed sleep disorders
Xanax, Ativan, Restoril anxiety
Valium, Librium, Klonopin, Dalmane anxiety, muscle relaxation, or seizure control

Common Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Medication

Continuous monitoring of the client during detox is essential. This includes tracking vital signs, managing symptoms, and ensuring overall stability.  Our medical team and staff will monitor and, when applicable, prescribe detox medication or structure a medication taper to minimize withdrawal effects.
