Holistic Methods in Addiction Recovery

Explore yoga, mindfulness, nutrition, movement and acupuncture as complementary parts of a treatment plan, with questions to discuss with your care team.
Updated October 21, 2026

Holistic care can bring attention to everyday well-being alongside medical and clinical treatment. At Tranquility Woods, the approach includes support for mindfulness, movement, nutrition, physical wellness and stress management. The activities that fit your care depend on your program, needs and treatment plan.

Yoga

Yoga often combines physical postures, breathing and meditation. Practices range from gentle to physically demanding. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) describes possible benefits for general wellness and stress, while noting that styles and research findings vary. Ask your care team and instructor which movements are appropriate and what adaptations are available.

Meditation and Mindfulness

Some meditation practices focus attention on breathing, a sound or another point of focus. Mindfulness involves noticing present experiences without immediately judging them. NCCIH’s overview discusses both the research and possible unwanted experiences. If a practice feels uncomfortable or increases distress, tell the person guiding it and discuss another approach.

Nutrition

Substance use and recovery can affect appetite, eating patterns and nutritional needs. MedlinePlus explains the role of nutrition during recovery. Talk with the care team about meals, hydration, allergies, medical conditions and any eating difficulties. Decisions about withdrawal treatment or supplements belong with a qualified health professional.

Movement and Fitness

Ask how movement fits into your daily schedule and what is suitable for your current health. You might discuss walking, gentle activity or a supervised exercise option, depending on what your program provides. Tell the team about pain, injuries or physical limitations so the activity can be considered alongside the rest of your care.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture uses fine needles placed by a practitioner. NCCIH describes its uses and safety considerations. If it is part of your proposed treatment plan, ask who provides it, what the intended purpose is and whether it is appropriate for you. Discuss cravings or withdrawal symptoms directly with the clinical team.

Discuss Options With Your Care Team

Explore holistic care at Tranquility Woods and ask which activities are included in your recommended program. A useful conversation covers the purpose of each activity, how it fits your goals and what alternatives are available if it does not suit you.
